A Way Out for Good: Pakistan Brick Kilns

Christians in Pakistan are often forced into the back-breaking work of making thousands of bricks a day. A system of greed keeps their families trapped in these horrible conditions for generations. These brick kiln laborers, often unseen an unheard, are among the most marginalized and vulnerable in Pakistan. A seemingly innocuous loan sets in motion a debt spiral. Due to the conditions of the kilns, families often get sick and need to take out added loans, keeping them locked in.

When Christians are freed from the brick kilns, they often don’t have the skills they need to support themselves — let alone their families — outside of the kilns. For many, brick kilns are the only life they’ve ever known.

Everything changes with the gift of an auto-rickshaw, and ICC has given nearly 100 new, dependable rickshaws to Christian families recently freed from the kilns.

“We feel so blessed that our Christian brothers and sisters are worrying for our lives,” said Abdul, and former brick kiln worker and ICC rickshaw recipient. “God has transformed our lives while bringing us to the stage where we are able to start the new business.”
